Aims:

  • To provide comprehensive of heart or lung transplantation including indications and current practices at Royal Papworth Hospital
  • To highlight key challenges in cardiothoracic transplantation
  • To enhance understanding of the MDT management of pre- and post-transplant patient including mechanical support and long-term follow-up

Day to include topics:

  • Referral for transplantation
  • Transplant assessment
  • Process of transplant:
    • Organ Donation
    • Challenges in Transplant Co-ordination
    • Organ Utilisation and Retrieval Service
  • Surgical considerations and techniques
  • Mechanical support devices: Left Ventricular Assistance Device (LVAD) and other circulatory support
  • Post-transplant patient long-term management
  • Patient’s perspective

Who should attend?

Nurses, allied healthcare practitioners and resident doctors – whether hospital or community based – who are involved in or have an interest in the care of patients before and after cardiothoracic transplantation or LVAD.
